What’s New and Trending with Tummy Tucks
One of the newest, and I think one of the greatest, advances in tummy tuck has been the development of a long-acting anesthetic that is injected into the muscle to give about a three to four day extended pain relief. That injection is called Exparel, and we have been using this over the past four or five years. Now, the only problem with Exparel is that the pain medication in this is released over an extended period of time. During the immediate post-operative period, patients do experience pain. So because of that, we are now adding bupivacaine to the Exparel. As a result of this addition, we now have immediate pain relief after surgery that extends for another three or four days. As a result of this decreased pain, there is less need for post-operative pain medication, the experience is much better, and the recovery period is certainly faster.
