About Breast Augmentation
Breast enhancement surgery is a procedure that reshapes the breasts for a fuller look. It is known as one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, granting women who dislike their breast appearance numerous opportunities for improvement. With the help of breast implants or fat grafting, this cosmetic treatment improves breast size and shape and produces a beautiful and balanced outcome. Baton Rouge, LA plastic surgeon Dr. John Williams is highly trained in implementing this procedure and performs many breast augmentations year round. When you have your consultation at Plastic Surgery Center of Baton Rouge, Dr. Williams will address your aesthetic desires and concerns and provide you with all of the choices available while also tailoring a treatment plan to achieve your personal goals.
When you are in your consultation with Dr. Williams, the appropriate implant will be chosen based on your body size and shape, as well as your aesthetic goals. Breast implants are made in varying shapes, sizes, profiles, and textures — each of which is considered carefully in order to achieve the wanted result. Still, the most commonly chosen breast implants are silicone or saline, both widely popular and approved to use per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). An important fact is that candidates considering saline breast implants must be at least 18 years old while patients must be at least 22 years of age in order to undergo surgery with silicone. Two other types of augmentations include a form-stable implant known as a gummy bear implant and an autologous approach through fat grafting. In addition to the type of implant used, there are other notable factors to decide.
Breast implant size is chosen based on the cubic centimeters (CCs) of saline or silicone used. To determine the correct volume, Dr. Williams will decipher how much native breast tissue exists and the size you wish to attain. In the operating room, it is normal for Dr. Williams to temporarily switch out multiple implants to get a better idea on a suitable fit.
Implants are produced in either a teardrop or round shape. Both of these shapes are widely used; however, the majority of our patients prefer a round shape. It generally appears more natural while adding a fullness to the top portion of the breast that most patients want.
Implant profile references how far out the implant looks (projection). In other words, this is what you see from the side angle. Most projections include a profile that ranges from low to extra high.
Making Your Choices
We understand all of the considerations may seem overwhelming, but picking the right implant is somewhat easy once the objectives are understood during the consultation. These considerations, paired with the knowledge of Dr. Williams, make certain the anticipated outcome is achieved.
Breast Augmentation Reviews
"Such a great experience! I am 39 yrs old and am 18 weeks post OP breast augmentation. I had small deflated A cup and now a full DD. They have healed beautifully and are soft to the touch and already feel like MINE. He did such a good job. My breasts look and feel amazing and my confidence sky rocketed. Excellent surgeon! I chose 485cc smooth round gel implants placed under muscle. He answered all my questions and calmed my anxiety about surgery.Explained different options and recommended options for my frame as well. Tried on sizers to get a feel for look and weight then set up virtual reality so I could see them on me before surgery too!Surgery was quick. Had zero bruising. Was back at my job by day 5. He has done regular follow ups to check progress and has a super helpful staff. Very comfortable warm environment and all was done in one place. I trust him with my body and so does my husband. "39 year old, 485cc (A to DD), silicone gel (gummy bear type) unders - I love all tatas. I loved my natural ones too but after kids I had lost what little tiny ones I had to begin with! I had some insecurities around my husband and he surprised me with the opportunity to get them done! So, I jumped at the chance. Dr. Williams consult was excellent. I had a ton of questions and he answered all of them patiently and even showed us the different implants so we could feel them, he gave me a ton of information about the different options I had from size to brand, shape and filling, so many options it can be confusing, he made everything easy to understand. We were starting with 34 barely A cup. We tried on different sizers in a bra to get an idea of size we wanted and then was set up with virtual reality showing me my new boobs to be! So cool and put all my crazy anxiety about a surgery to rest! I chose 485cc smooth round silicone gummy bear (Gel implants) placed underneath the muscle. The procedure was quick and had NO bruising! Very little pain, mostly felt pressure on chest from swelling for a few days, which is completely expected after being placed under muscle. I was back to work by day 5. I had weight restrictions for a few weeks and I massaged them daily once instructed. My husband was welcomed at consult and asked his own questions too! I am currently 10 weeks post op, they are DD cups at the moment lol and I LOVE them! They feel like they're mine already and I thought it'd take a lot longer. Very soft, husband loves how soft they are as well. I have no pain and have resumed my active life including working out! I LOVE being able to wear anything now! They are doing awesome and the subtle changes as they fully settle into place over the next few months are gonna keep me falling in love with them! Dr. Williams and his staff are awesome, very knowledgeable, great bedside manners. Attentive to my needs, very skilled surgeon my breasts feel and look incredible and he didn't have much to work with! I like that Dr. Williams does regular follow ups as well to check progress, provided me with excellent scar creams and I love the silky robes used for exams! I trust this doctor with my body and so does my husband. Dr. Williams work has uplifted my self esteem so much I can't thank him enough! I most definitely recommend him for breast augmentation!"- A. / RealSelf / Jun 09, 2019

Ideal Candidates for Breast Augmentation
The decision to undergo breast enhancement surgery is personal. If you are considering this surgery, it is essential you do it for yourself. You should be healthy and at a normal weight with breasts that are formed, and be the right age to receive implants. If you are unhappy with the shape of your chest because they look deflated, you could benefit from this surgery. Moreover, if your breasts have changed due to age, pregnancy, or weight loss, this treatment can give them life with increased shape and fullness. It is a welcomed answer if you weight train or have limited native breast mass.
Surgical Technique for a Breast Augmentation
Incision placement, as well as implant location, are aspects that will need to be made prior to surgery. During breast augmentation, the chosen incision is created and then the selected implant will be placed into its position. There are two techniques that may be applied for implant placement. These are either under the pectoral muscle, or behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. Where to insert the breast implant depends on varying factors, including the size and type of implant, plus the expertise of Dr. Williams. Regardless of the incision type, scarring is usually rare. Placement and location are based upon your implant size, activity level, and body type.
What to Expect from a Breast Augmentation
Cosmetic breast surgery is an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. After completing the incision, the breast implant will be placed through the incision opening and deposited into a surgically created pocket, and then secured into its correct position. Following the placement of the implant, the incision is carefully secured with skin adhesives or sutures. Each patient will be taken into a recovery area and observed prior to being released. You will be instructed to continue wearing a medical sports bra to help reduce swelling. Several days after surgery, the swelling will begin to dissipate, and the breasts will start to look and feel normal as they get used to their new position. The majority of patients can resume everyday activities within several days; however, physical exertion, such as exercise, should be delayed for about a couple of months. This surgery produces gorgeous outcomes that feel and appear normal. This procedure oftentimes can be a life changer for many individuals, offering them the opportunity to feel more confident.
Breast Augmentation FAQs
How much does breast augmentation cost?
Your cost for breast augmentation will vary, depending on your choices and whether you are getting any other surgeries. When your treatment plan is made, Dr. Williams will go over estimated costs, as well as financing. To make sure you are happy with your results and they last a long time, it is better to focus on quality over low costs.
Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan might include implants, a lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes loose skin and raises the breasts while implants enhance the shape and size. In your consultation with Dr. Williams, he will listen to your concerns and goals before discussing your treatment options. An augmentation and lift are usually included in a mommy makeover to revitalize the breasts after breastfeeding and pregnancy.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you might want to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, talk to Dr. Williams during your consultation. It's usually possible to breastfeed after augmentation surgery with the right placement and technique. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can affect your results, which is why it is better to wait until your family is complete to get breast surgery.
Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you would like to remove or replace your implants. Should this happen, Dr. Williams offers breast revision surgery. In revision surgery, your old implants will be either replaced with different implants or removed. If you want to have your implants removed, you might need to have a breast lift because larger implants may stretch your skin. For any concerns or questions after your augmentation surgery, schedule a consultation at Plastic Surgery Center of Baton Rouge to learn more about your options.
Do implants cause breast cancer?
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is investigating a link between implants and ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma). This isn't breast cancer, but it is a cancer of the immune system. According to WHO (World Health Organization), implant-related ALCL is very rare and if caught early, it's highly treatable. Dr. Williams encourages all patients with implants to get frequent screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Plastic Surgery Center of Baton Rouge if you see any concerns, like swelling.
