How A Brow Lift Freshens Up Your Face
Facial expressions are almost a language in and of themselves: When you lift a brow quizzically or furrow your brow in worry, words are hardly necessary. But if aging has left you with heavy or drooping brows, you may be inadvertently expressing something you don’t mean.
If drooping brows are giving you a permanently angry or tired look, despite how happy or well rested you may be, a brow lift might be just the thing to get your face to really tell your story. Here at Plastic Surgery of Baton Rouge, we offer several types of brow lift procedures to our patients in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, giving them an outlook that’s more in line with how they feel.
Take a minute to explore how a brow lift freshens up your face.
Behind the droop
The primary role of your brows is to protect your eyeballs by surrounding them with strong bony structures and hair to catch debris from entering your eyes. Interestingly, many researchers believe that the reason modern humans have less pronounced brow ridges than our Neanderthal cousins is because our eyebrows are key communicators, moving in many directions to deliver important messages.
In evolutionary terms, the researchers believed that our brow bones flattened in order to allow more communication with our eyebrows as humans began to socialize more.
So, it would be no exaggeration to say that your eyebrows speak volumes, and you want to make sure you’re sending the right message. While your bony structure remains the same throughout your life, your browline can change dramatically with aging as your skin begins to droop and lines start to deepen.
Your skin relies on collagen for structure and firmness, but you produce less and less as you age, and your skin begins to succumb to gravity as a result. This downward migration of your skin is coupled with deepening lines that are the result of every facial expression you’ve ever made, and they begin to leave well-worn paths that your collagen is no longer able to correct.
Rounding out the list of culprits when it comes to drooping eyebrows and forehead lines is the loss of the thin layer of fat under the skin above your eyes, which starts to disappear without the support your collagen once provided.
Give it a lift
With a brow lift, we can go in and correct your drooping eyebrows, lifting them back into place to give you a brighter, more alert look, one that exudes youth and vitality. During the same procedure, we can also disengage the muscles responsible for the deep lines in your forehead and between your eyebrows.
When we do brow lifts, we can go about them in several ways. The first is called a coronal brow lift, where we make an incision across your forehead at your hairline. Once the incision is made, we go in and pull your eyebrows back into position, remove the excess tissue, and resuture your skin at your hairline, effectively hiding any scarring. During this procedure, we can disable the muscles that create the deep lateral lines across your forehead and the vertical lines between your brows.
If you’d prefer not to have the full incision, we can go in through smaller 1- to 2-inch incisions at your temples to lift your brows and tackle the deep lines above them. Because of the limited access, we’re not able to address the vertical lines between your brows or the lines across your forehead.
Lastly, if you’d simply like to remove the vertical line between your brows that makes it look like you’re always scowling, we offer a simple lateral-temporal brow lift, where we remove or modify the muscles that create the crease.
Choosing what’s best for you
Figuring out which procedure is right for you is best done during your initial consultation when we can sit down and review your issues and your goals. We always use minimally invasive techniques, such as endoscopic surgery, where we can reduce the size of your incisions and minimize tissue damage.
We perform all of our brow lifts on an outpatient basis, which means you’re free to go home afterward. You should expect some minor swelling while your tissue heals, but after a few weeks, you’ll greet the world with facial expressions that actually reflect how you feel, rather than reveal your age.
