Feeling Saggy? Perk Up with a Breast Lift
Your breasts may be sagging more than they used to, and for lots of reasons: time, gravity, pregnancy, weight loss or gain, or genetics. Whatever the reason, if you’re uncomfortable with how your breasts look, Dr. John Williams is happy to discuss your options.
There are as many reasons to consider a breast lift as there are women who have the surgery. Overall, you can expect your body to look younger and more uplifted. It’s a generally low-risk procedure, and recovery usually takes about a week.
Who is a good candidate for a breast lift?
You can get a breast lift regardless of age as long as your breasts are fully developed. If you’re unhappy with the shape of your breasts, you may want to consider the surgery.
For example, if you’ve lost weight, your breasts may sag more than they used to. A breast lift may be a step in your personal transformation.
Many women find their breasts change shape during pregnancy. This is because the tissues that support them stretch as they get heavier. Breastfeeding itself doesn’t necessarily change your breast shape, but producing milk can.
As you age, your skin becomes less elastic, which can also cause your breasts to sag. This is the reason a breast lift results in an overall younger appearance.
If your nipples point downward or are below the crease of your breasts, you may want to consider a breast lift. If you can place a pencil below your breast and it stays, you may be a good candidate for a breast lift.
What’s involved in the surgery?
A full breast lift is called a mastopexy. When Dr. Williams performs a mastopexy, he removes excess skin and reshapes the breast tissue, and he may also reposition your nipples.
If your breasts are sagging only a little, there are several other procedures that Dr. Williams may recommend. For example, the circumareolar, or doughnut, mastopexy changes the size and shape of your areola without reshaping the rest of your breast tissue. Dr. Williams recommends the procedure that is best aligned with your goals and expectations, as well as your age, lifestyle, and other important factors.
When will I see results?
You’ll notice a change in the shape of your breasts immediately, although you’re probably going to have swelling and bruising for a couple of weeks following the surgery. It may take a couple of months before you can see the final results as the tissue in your breasts settles and firms up.
You’ll be able to return to work about a week after your surgery, and the bruising should fade within about two weeks. You’ll be able to shower within one or two days, and the majority of your stitches will be absorbed by your body so you won’t need to worry about having them removed.
Whatever your reasons for considering a breast lift, learning more about how the procedure works and what you should expect from it is a good idea. A breast lift alone doesn’t change the size of your breasts, but you also may be interested in breast enhancement or reduction, which can be performed at the same time as a breast lift.
