Need-to-Know Information About Lip Fillers
Those wishing to change the volume, structure, and shape of their lips are increasingly choosing lip augmentation to achieve their goals. If you’re considering this procedure, the following information will help you to make an informed decision.
What Are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are products that add fullness to the lips. These products are available in topical and injectable form. However, topical lip fillers are only able to reach just below the skin’s surface, whereas injectable fillers are able to reach the skin’s deeper layers.
The Secret of Beautiful Lips
The new ideal for beautiful lips is not only larger lips, but also a natural and well-defined appearance. For years, lip fillers were injected throughout the entire lips. This created overly large, poorly defined, and very unnatural-appearing lips. Lip fillers are now injected into specific areas of the lip to create definition as well as fullness.
To obtain the natural, beautiful fullness of the lips, fillers are injected separately into the “tubercles” or the natural protuberances of the lips. There are three in the upper lip, one in the midline, and one on either side. Injections in these areas help highlight the cupid’s bow of the upper lip.
The two tubercles in the lower lip, one on either side of the midline, are separately injected to give lower lip definition and fullness. The philtrum, or the natural indentation between the base of the nose and the upper lips, is accentuated by injection of the philtral ridges. The philtral ridges are the two elevations on either side of the mid-lip indentation. This concept of only injecting specific areas of the lips creates the ideal pouty, beautiful lips.
What Types of Injections Are Available?
There are three main brand names of lip injections available: Juvederm, Restylane, and BOTOX.
Juvederm consists of a gel made of synthetic hyaluronic acid, also known as HA. HA is a substance that already exists in our bodies, and it helps the skin maintain its elasticity and strength.
Juvederm lip fillers are available in two formulations. Those wishing to add only slight volume and treat vertical lines in the lips may benefit from Juvederm Volbella XC. This product will allow fullness that has a more natural appearance, and the results can last for up to 12 months.
For those wanting more dramatic results, Juvederm Ultra XC offers a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid than Volbella, and it can reduce fine lip lines as well as lift the lower and upper lips. Results from this product can last from between 6 to 12 months.
Restylane is also a popular lip filler product that contains hyaluronic acid. Restylane Silk is a popular choice for those older than 21 years of age who are seeking more natural and subtle results. The latest FDA-approved Restylane product is Kysse, which also contains hyaluronic acid.
However, the HA contained in Kysse binds to itself, but also integrates into lip tissue where injected, molding to that tissue when you smile, speak, or kiss. Results with this product may last up to one year.
BOTOX contains botulinum toxin, which relaxes and freezes the muscles. When injected into the lips, this lip enhancer can smooth out creases around the upper and lower lips, as well as raise the corners of the mouth and enhance the look of the upper lip.
A popular procedure is known as the “Botox lip flip.” The product is injected into the muscle of the upper lip, which relaxes it, causing the lip to roll or “flip” upward. This causes the upper lip to look fuller. Results from this procedure can last for up to four months.
